315km mass-participation lap of Lake Vättern from Motala, Sweden. Almost flat (~1,500m) — the challenge is distance, wind, group-riding and 10-14hr in the saddle, much of it overnight. ~20,000+ riders — one of the world's largest cycling events. Next edition ~18 June 2027 (approximate).
Location
Lap of Lake Vättern, start/finish Motala, Sweden
A 315km lap of Lake Vättern with one of the world's biggest bunches: 20,000+ riders rolling out of Motala from Friday evening into Saturday morning. This is Swedish endurance at its most iconic.
The lake keeps it flat. Only about 1,500m of climbing across the whole day, so there's no col, no summit, no decisive climb. Just Gränna, Jönköping, Hjo, Karlsborg and the long open shore.
The difficulty is the distance, the wind off the water, and 10 to 14 hours in the saddle, part of it in the dark. Sit in a good group and it flies. Get isolated in the wind and it bites.
Who this suits
- Riders chasing a bucket-list distance. 315km is a longest-ever ride for many, but flat roads and group support make it far more achievable than the number sounds.
- Patient riders who pace and fuel. Over 10-plus hours this is an eating and rationing day, not a place to burn fresh legs early.
- Confident group riders. Sitting in a working paceline saves hours over grinding the open lakeside shore solo into the wind.
- Anyone happy to start in the dark. Depending on your wave, part of the day is ridden overnight or at dawn under lights.
Training plan
A training plan for Vätternrundan isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the day throws at you
- 315km flat and 10 to 14 hours in the saddle: the test is durability, not gradient
- Long headwind stretches on the open lakeside shore where solo riders suffer
- Part of the ride in dark or half-light depending on your start wave
- Nine feed stops and no private support, so fuelling and pacing are on you
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Long steady Z2 rides building from 4h toward a 7 to 8h peak
- Back-to-back weekends: 5 to 6h Saturday, 3 to 4h Sunday, for cumulative fatigue
- Chaingangs and club runs to rotate turns and learn to sit in and save energy
- Flat tempo blocks, 2 to 3 by 30 to 45min, to hold a steady pace efficiently
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
- One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
