UNBOUND Gravel

The world's premier gravel race: a self-supported 200 mile (322 km) ultra across the Flint Hills of Kansas, defined by brutal June heat, flint tyre-cuts, and long remote self-sufficiency. Distances from 25 to 350 mile.

Date
5 Jun 2027
Location
Emporia, Kansas, USA (Granada Theatre start → Flint Hills)
Category
Gravel
Difficulty
Tough

The world's benchmark gravel race. The flagship UNBOUND 200 sends you deep across the tallgrass Flint Hills of Kansas, self-supported, from the Granada Theatre in Emporia on a Saturday in early June.

This is a heat and durability test first, a power test second. Brutal 30°C+ prairie heat, no shade, and relentless open-prairie wind that taxes you for hours across the tallgrass.

It is won by durability, the rider still turning the pedals deep into the day, not by peak power. Shorter 25, 50 and 100 mile distances make UNBOUND a real goal without the full self-supported ultra.

Who this suits

Is UNBOUND Gravel for you?

  • Diesel-engine riders who thrive on long, steady days over short, sharp efforts. UNBOUND rewards durability, not top-end power.
  • Athletes who respect the heat and pace to the temperature, not their FTP. Holding power as your core temperature climbs is what ends days here.
  • Self-sufficient riders happy to carry spares and plug a flint-cut tyre miles from any support.
  • Riders who fuel and drink with discipline, taking on food from the first kilometre rather than waiting to feel hungry.
Training plan

Training plan for UNBOUND Gravel

A training plan for UNBOUND Gravel isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.

01 · Race demands
A hot day of attrition
  • Nine to fifteen-plus hours in the saddle: an endurance day, not a power test
  • Sharp flint rock that slices tyres, the classic cause of a day-ending mechanical
  • Long remote gaps between checkpoints where a repair is entirely on you
  • A fast, adrenaline start in big groups that lures you into an unsustainable pace
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Progressive long gravel rides building from 3hr toward a 7-9hr peak, the core adaptation
  • Event-pace long rides rehearsing 70-100g of carbs an hour and heavy fluid intake
  • Heat work: midday rides in the warmest hours, plus sauna sessions after easy spins
  • Sweet-spot gravel efforts, 2-3x 20min, and tyre-repair drills for self-sufficiency
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
  • One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
