Remote self-supported gravel bikepacking through Ontario/Quebec Canadian Shield wilderness, ~385/805/1,610km route options. Late-August date and distances/elevation approximate.
Location
Almonte, Ontario, Canada (loop)
Category
Bikepacking race — solo / pairs
A self-supported gravel bikepacking race through the Canadian Shield, looping out of Almonte, Ontario into the Ontario and Quebec backcountry. No feed stations, no marshals, no prizes. Just you, a GPX file and the forest.
Pick your distance: roughly 385, 805 or 1,610km of gravel roads, logging tracks and rail-trail. Late August, one full night of riding minimum, resupply gaps that stretch for hours.
Remoteness is the whole point. Around fifty riders scatter into the wilderness, and the race becomes food, water, navigation and keeping yourself moving when help is a long way off.

Who this suits
- Riders drawn to true remoteness and self-sufficiency, happy to be hours from the nearest shop with only a GPX for company.
- Methodical planners. Resupply gaps, shop opening hours and how much food you carry decide this race as much as the legs do.
- Steady diesel engines rather than sprinters. Moderate effort held for days beats raw power here.
- Anyone comfortable, or wanting to get comfortable, riding a loaded bike through total forest darkness.
Training plan
A training plan for Log Driver's Waltz isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the Waltz throws at you
- Long days on the bike, from 24 hours to over a week depending on route, with at least one full night in total forest darkness.
- Washboard gravel and loose logging roads that rattle kit loose and quietly drain your energy.
- Big gaps between resupply: carry your own food and water and plan around small-town shop hours.
- Constant self-navigation by GPS through forest junctions and unmarked logging-road spurs.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Long Z2 gravel rides, building from 4 to 8-plus hours, the core session of every week.
- Back-to-back weekends: a big Saturday, then a tired Sunday, to learn riding on empty legs.
- Loaded rides and rough washboard sessions with full bikepacking kit for handling and comfort.
- Night navigation rides on unfamiliar gravel, plus an overnight bivvy trip in the specialise block.
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
- One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
