42.195km flat, fast road marathon through the imperial city and along the Danube. ~120m gentle elevation, a genuine PB and Boston-qualifier course. One of the big European spring marathons.
Flat, fast, and built for a PB. Vienna's marathon runs 42.195km on closed city roads through the imperial core and long stretches beside the Danube, with only ~120m of gentle rise.
The terrain will not beat you. Your pacing might. A flat course tempts a hot start, and that early greed is exactly what builds the wall at 30km.
Run it evenly, fuel it properly, negative-split it if you can. The real race is 32km to the finish, on fresh, well-fuelled legs.
Who this suits
- Runners chasing a personal best. Flat, smooth and fast, Vienna gives back the time your fitness has earned when you pace it right.
- Disciplined pacers. The course rewards an even or negative split and punishes anyone who banks time early on the tempting flat opening.
- Boston hopefuls with the volume behind them. A fast, well-organised spring marathon on closed roads is an ideal qualifying venue.
- First-timers who want a forgiving profile. No hills to break your rhythm, so the challenge stays honest: distance, fuelling and patience.
Training plan

01 · Race demands
What Vienna throws at you
- 42.195km at pace on flat, fast closed roads, where even splits win and hot starts unravel
- The wall at ~30km, no different on a flat course than a hilly one
- 60 to 90g of carbs per hour for 3-plus hours, a fuelling job you have to rehearse
- Danube wind on the long, exposed river stretches, best handled by tucking in behind others
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- The marathon-pace long run: 28 to 35km with 15 to 20km at goal pace, fuelled exactly as on race day
- Progressive, negative-split long runs finishing the last 8 to 10km at pace or faster
- Long tempo of 40 to 60 minutes continuous at marathon pace, controlled not hard
- Threshold intervals (3 to 4 x 3km) plus a mid-week 14 to 18km medium-long run for volume
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
