~2,500km self-supported ultra-distance road race across the Alps with three mandatory summits and ~30,000m+ of climbing. Peaks and route change yearly; ~2027 date and figures are approximate.
Location
Vienna, Austria → Mediterranean coast (route varies)
Category
Road ultra — solo / pairs
The most vertical of the major European road ultras. A self-supported traverse of the Alps where the clock never stops from the mass-start Grand Depart to the finish on the coast.
The three summits you must reach change every edition, and so do the roads between them. Historically it starts in Vienna and runs point to point toward the Mediterranean, self-navigated the whole way.
The mountains, not the miles, are the point. Warm valleys, freezing high passes, long cold descents on tired legs. Finishing takes anywhere from four and a half days to two weeks.
Who this suits
- Strong, durable climbers. The rider who wins is whoever can repeat the same climbing tempo col after col, day after day, not whoever posts the biggest one-off number.
- Self-sufficient riders. You navigate your own line between the summits, resupply from shops and cafes, and fix your own mechanicals on the road.
- Athletes who manage a multi-day grind. Sleep discipline, steady fuelling and morale matter as much as the legs once the fatigue stacks up.
- Planners. Low climbing gears fitted and tested, and real cold-weather kit packed for the summits well before the start.
Training plan
A training plan for Three Peaks Bike Race isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
A climber's ultra
- Relentless climbing, day after day. Holding a repeatable tempo on the fifth col is the whole game, not a one-off effort.
- Altitude. Several passes and summits sit well above 2,000m, with thinner air on the longest climbs.
- Route choice. You link the mandatory peaks yourself, and an efficient line can save hours.
- Multiple nights out. You climb and descend high passes in the dark, cold and fatigued.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Big vertical days building progressively toward 4,000 to 5,000m of climbing in a single ride.
- Weekend doubles: a big climbing day, then hilly hours the next to ride on tired legs.
- Sustained climb repeats and multi-col loops for a tempo you can hold col after col.
- A three to four day self-supported mountain trip, plus an overnight ride that includes a long night descent.
