The Mid South

Cult community red-dirt gravel race (formerly Land Run 100) — ~100mi/~1,830m of rolling Oklahoma prairie, fast when dry, infamous peanut-butter mud when wet. Date approximate (mid-March).

Date
13 Mar 2027
Location
Stillwater, Oklahoma
Category
Gravel
Difficulty
Tough

One of gravel's most beloved races, the cult red-dirt classic once known as Land Run 100. Around 100 miles and 6,000 ft of rolling Oklahoma prairie out of Stillwater, on a Saturday in mid March.

The red-dirt roads are fast and rolling in the dry. Add rain and the clay turns to peanut-butter mud that clogs tyres and drivetrains and forces you to shoulder the bike.

Same course, two completely different days: a fast power race or an all-day survival slog. The forecast writes the story, and a huge, passionate community keeps people coming back for it.

Who this suits

Is The Mid South for you?

  • Steady rolling-endurance riders who fuel well and pace a long day instead of surging every roller.
  • Riders happy to prepare for two races at once: a dry power day and a wet mud slog, decided by the forecast.
  • Group riders who can sit in and shelter, because the open-prairie wind is a tax you pay for hours.
  • First-timers who pick the 50 as a sensible first gravel goal before taking on the full 100.

01 · Race demands
A weather lottery on red dirt
  • Around 6,000 ft of rolling gravel over 100 miles, no big climbs, just relentless prairie rollers.
  • A weather coin-toss: fast power race in the dry, hike-a-bike mud survival when it rains.
  • Constant open-prairie wind that grinds on you for hours.
  • Fuelling for a 5 to 9 hour day, far longer if the mud comes.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Progressive rolling long rides on gravel, building from 3 hours out to a 5 to 6 hour peak.
  • Into-the-wind tempo: 3 to 4 x 10 to 20 min holding pace into a headwind.
  • Sweet-spot gravel efforts: 2 to 3 x 15 to 20 min at 88 to 93% FTP.
  • One deliberate wet, muddy ride to rehearse clearing mud and saving the drivetrain.
