Long self-supported off-road bikepacking loop linking the cities of Wales across mountains, valleys and coast, ~1,200km. Late-July date and distances/elevation approximate.
Location
Rogerstone, South Wales (loop)
Category
Bikepacking race — solo / pairs
A self-supported off-road loop that links every city of Wales in one lap of roughly 1,200km. No support crews, no prizes, no course markings. Just a GPX file, a dot on a tracker, and the whole country to cross.
The line stitches the south Wales valleys, the wild Cambrian mountains of mid-Wales, technical Snowdonia bridleways, and wind-raked coast. Climbing stacks up toward 20,000m.
This is a week-plus effort, not a weekend, ridden in a small field. Multiple nights alone in the hills, and the honest truth that on night four in the rain your head is the limiter, not your legs.

Who this suits
- Genuinely self-sufficient riders. Navigation, mechanicals, resupply and sleeping rough all get solved alone, with no crew, no feed stations and no marshals out on the route.
- Patient riders who ration effort. Over a week-plus of mountains the win is repeating a sustainable day, not chasing a fast one that you cannot back up tomorrow.
- Anyone comfortable in mountain darkness. Solo riders face several nights, so lights, GPS and calm route-finding in the dark matter as much as raw fitness.
- Off-road handlers who accept hike-a-bike. The Snowdonia and Cambrian bridleways are rocky and boggy, and pushing a loaded bike up the steep sections is normal.
Training plan
A training plan for 7 Cities of Wales isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What Wales throws at you
- Close to 20,000m of climbing over roughly 1,200km, most of it on rough mountain ground
- Consecutive big days: this is repeated mountain riding for a week or more, not one long push
- Multiple nights alone, self-navigated by GPX, with sparse resupply through mid-Wales
- Welsh mountain weather that turns hostile even in July, and technical terrain ridden under a loaded bike
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Three-day mountain blocks, like Sat 8h plus Sun 6h plus Mon 5h, to rehearse cumulative fatigue
- Long Z2 hilly endurance rides building toward 10+ hours with 1,500m or more of climbing
- A multi-night mountain trip on full kit: climb, ride technical, sleep rough, repeat
- Night navigation and overnight rides, plus loaded hike-a-bike and lower-body strength work
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
- One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
