The Roman's Revenge

Grassroots Welsh gravel sportive over old Roman roads and forest tracks — punchy, repeated loose-surface climbing, self-reliant and weather-exposed. Long and short routes; ALL distance/climbing figures and the early-to-mid-October 2027 date are approximate (confirm with organiser).

Difficulty
Tough

Roman roads go over the hills, not around them. \n\nIt's a self-reliant day. Remote upland, patchy signal, minimal feed and no support van. \n\nOctober in the Welsh uplands is often wet, cold and windy, and wet loose gravel gets greasy.

It's a timed sportive, not a race, with a rolling start. Long and short routes.

Who this suits

Is The Roman's Revenge for you?

  • Self-reliant riders who like being their own mechanic. Remote upland, patchy signal and minimal support mean you carry your spares and food and sort your own problems.
  • Punchy climbers who ration the effort. The steep loose pitches come again and again, so it rewards riders who meter each one instead of redlining the first.
  • Gravel riders comfortable on loose, steep surfaces. Traction on wet Welsh ramps saves real time and energy over narrow or slick setups.
  • Anyone who welcomes a cold, wet, honest day out. This is gritty grassroots Wales, not a mild autumn spin on a supported course.

Training plan for The Roman's Revenge

A training plan for The Roman's Revenge isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.

01 · Race demands
What the Roman roads throw at you
  • Repeated short, steep, loose climbs stacked into real cumulative fatigue
  • Power on loose gravel, where traction on steep ramps matters as much as legs
  • A long, weather-exposed upland day that asks for aerobic durability
  • Full self-reliance: your own spares, food and navigation on remote ground
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Punchy gravel hill repeats: 8 to 12 by 1 to 3 min steep efforts, the Roman-road punches rehearsed
  • Traction-on-steeps work, cleaning loose ramps seated and standing without spinning out
  • Sweet-spot blocks of 2 to 3 by 15 to 20 min to underpin the punches
  • Long Z2 gravel rides with back-half punches, climbing on cooked legs plus a full kit and fuelling rehearsal
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
  • One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
