One of Australia's biggest gravel races and part of the GRVL Events family (with SBT and FNLD) — fast, competitive Adelaide Hills gravel with prize money over ~130km/~2,500m of rolling climbs. Date approximate.
Location
Adelaide Hills, South Australia, Australia
A genuine gravel race, not a challenge ride. RADL GRVL is part of the GRVL Events family alongside SBT and FNLD, with prize money at the front and one of Australia's biggest, fastest fields chasing it.
130km and 2,500m of climbing through the Adelaide Hills, out east of Adelaide. Vineyards, farm gravel and forest tracks strung into a punchy loop, on a Sunday in mid-April.
The surface is fast, well-graded Hills gravel, so the pace stays high. Think road race on gravel: hold a wheel, cover the moves, and race the rollers rather than survive them.
Who this suits
- Road racers moving to gravel. The front rides at road-race intensity on a fast surface, so a strong bunch rider transfers straight across.
- Riders with a repeatable punch. The selections come on stacked rollers, rewarding whoever can hit 3 to 8 minute efforts again and again without cracking.
- Anyone who can hold a wheel in a fast group. Following surges and sheltering on the connectors turns a 5 hour race into a manageable one.
- Racers picking their day. The Medium and Short are real goals, and the Long is a fast, competitive 4 to 5 hour effort at the pointy end.
Training plan
A training plan for RADL GRVL isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the race throws at you
- A fast opening hour on gravel where getting gapped means a long, lonely day
- Around 2,500m of climbing as repeated rollers, so the same threshold punch over and over
- Bunch racing on gravel: holding wheels and covering selections decides your placing
- A carb-hungry 4 to 5 hour effort at race pace that punishes anyone who fuels late
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Rolling threshold repeats: 6 to 10 by 3 to 8 minutes on climbs with short recovery, the core race demand
- Over-unders: 3 to 4 by 8 to 12 minutes to handle surges without blowing up
- Race-simulation rides of 3 to 4 hours with hard rolling efforts and full fuelling rehearsal
- A long gravel ride building 2.5 up to 4 to 5 hours to cover the distance
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
