Mongolia Bike Challenge

Remote multi-day MTB stage race across the Mongolian steppe (~400-600km, approximate). Long open distance, wind and exposure; ridden solo with real self-sufficiency and navigation demands. Date and figures approximate.

Date
1 Aug 2027
Location
Mongolia (steppe, from the Ulaanbaatar region)
Category
MTB stage race — solo
Difficulty
Tough

One of the most remote stage races in the world. Around 500km and 10,000m of climbing across the open Mongolian steppe, ridden solo, radiating from the Ulaanbaatar region on faint two-track and animal trails.

It's the isolation that defines it. Long treeless days where wind, exposure and self-reliance matter more than any single number. Feed points are far apart, so you carry your own food, water and spares.

This isn't a technical descending race or a one-day peak. It's back-to-back big days across empty country, held in August, where surviving the distance is the real test. Figures are approximate until the organiser confirms.

Who this suits

Is Mongolia Bike Challenge for you?

  • Diesel-engine riders who love long solo days. This rewards steady durability over the week, not a sharp one-hour effort.
  • Anyone comfortable being self-reliant. You carry your own kit, fix your own mechanicals and navigate faint tracks far from support.
  • Riders who pace with discipline. Metering effort across exposed, windy sections is what keeps the back of each stage together.
  • Adventure-minded athletes chasing a bucket-list expedition. Hours alone in vast, empty country is the reward as much as the challenge.

01 · Race demands
What the steppe throws at you
  • Back-to-back long open-distance stages, where single-day fitness fades as fatigue accumulates
  • Relentless wind and exposure across treeless terrain, with weather that turns fast
  • Self-sufficiency between sparse support: carry food, water and spares, and fix your own bike
  • River crossings and a mild altitude penalty on the higher stages
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Long Z2 rides of four to seven hours on open, mixed terrain to build distance durability
  • Weekend doubles: five to six hours on Saturday, then four to five on tired legs Sunday
  • Self-supported long rides carrying your own food, water and spares to rehearse self-reliance
  • Tempo climb repeats of three to four by fifteen minutes in Z3, plus repair and navigation drills
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
  • One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
