La Rioja Bike Race

UCI 3-stage MTB stage race around Logroño through the Rioja vineyards and Moncalvillo sierra — ~150km / ~4,000m, with a demanding UCI-rated queen stage. Cumulative GC. Date approximate.

Date
5 Mar 2027
Location
Logroño, La Rioja, Spain
Category
MTB stage race — solo / pairs
Difficulty
Tough

Three timed stages through the Rioja vineyards and the Moncalvillo sierra, ranked on cumulative time. A UCI-sanctioned MTB race where amateurs ride the same technical tracks as the elite field.

The difficulty isn't spread evenly. A short opener around Logroño, then the queen stage: roughly 71km and 2,100m in Moncalvillo, where the whole GC swings.

It's early season, late winter in northern Spain. Cold mornings, maybe wet, muddy vineyard soil and rocky sierra singletrack. Ride the technical lines clean, because a crash on the queen stage costs the most.

Who this suits

Is La Rioja Bike Race for you?

  • Climbers who can ride one big sustained day. The GC is won on Moncalvillo's queen stage, not spread evenly across the week.
  • Riders comfortable on technical off-road. Sierra singletrack and mixed vineyard soil reward handling, and you share the tracks with a UCI field.
  • Athletes who recover well and back up. Three consecutive timed days punish anyone who empties the tank on the opener.
  • Early-season riders with a solid winter base. It lands in late winter, so it rewards consistent off-road months over a summer peak.

01 · Race demands
What the race throws at you
  • One big queen stage: roughly 2,100m of sustained Moncalvillo climbing decides your GC
  • Technical sierra singletrack and mixed vineyard soil, potentially wet and muddy
  • Three consecutive timed days, so fatigue accumulates and recovery becomes part of the race
  • Cold, early-season mornings in northern Spain
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Long off-road rides of 2.5 to 4 hours to build queen-stage durability and rehearse fuelling
  • Sustained trail climbs, 3 to 4 x 15 to 25 min at threshold, for Moncalvillo specificity
  • Back-to-back MTB weekends: a longer Saturday, then a Sunday on tired legs
  • Weekly technical descending on sierra-style trails to free up time and stay safe
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
