Bikepacking race — solo
Further Unceded is built around carrying your bike over mountains, not just riding it. The Canadian edition of Camille McMillan's Further: a self-supported Race and Rally deep in the remote BC Coast Mountains north of Pemberton.
Roughly 560km, but that number lies. The story is the estimated 12,000m-plus of climbing and the passes you cross on foot with the bike on your shoulder. Judge it by the vertical, not the mileage.
It's savage, and remote in a way few events are: bear country, no phone signal, sparse resupply, wet coastal weather. One fixed multi-day window in September. Race the front or rally it, but be fully self-reliant.
Who this suits
- Hybrid athletes who are as strong on foot as on the bike. The carry sectors decide this event, so riders who only pedal get broken on the passes.
- Confident off-road climbers and technical descenders, comfortable handling a loaded bike on loose, steep, unforgiving BC terrain.
- Genuinely self-reliant riders: navigation, mechanicals, weather calls and bear-country discipline, all with help a long way off.
- Adventurers as much as racers. The rally ethos means finishing safely and experiencing the wilderness counts, not just placing.
Training plan
A training plan for Further Unceded isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What Further throws at you
- Relentless vertical for the distance on loose, steep, washboarded logging roads. Ascent that dwarfs the mileage.
- Heavy hike-a-bike: carrying, not just pushing, the bike over scree and pathless alpine passes.
- A multi-day self-supported effort with sparse resupply, no signal, and genuine bear-country wilderness.
- Wet BC weather, cold and sometimes snowy passes, and meaningful darkness to keep moving through.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Ride and Carry Days: ride to the hills, carry the bike over a steep pass, ride home. The core Further session.
- Big climbing rides of 5 to 8 hours with 2,000 to 4,000m of ascent on gravel and logging roads.
- Bike-carry sessions and hill walks with an 8 to 12kg pack to build carrying and hiking endurance.
- Loaded carries and lower-body gym work, because carrying a bike over mountains is a strength demand.
