Etape Eryri

Marquee closed-road Snowdonia sportive from Caernarfon Castle — three routes (~43/70/120mi), the Mawr taking in Pen-y-Pass / Llanberis Pass and ~2,700-3,000m of Eryri climbing. Next date ~2027-06-12 approximate.

Difficulty
Tough

A Snowdonia mountain sportive where the number that matters isn't the distance, it's the climbing. From Caernarfon Castle into Eryri, you're either going up or coming down. There's almost no flat.

Three routes share the passes: the Bach at ~43mi, the Canol at ~70mi, and the Mawr at ~120mi with 2,700 to 3,000m of climbing over Pen-y-Pass and the Llanberis Pass.

The Welsh bergs are short and steep, hitting 15 to 20 percent, and they keep coming. Every pass is an anaerobic tax. Pace one too hard early and the late ramps will find you.

Who this suits

Is Etape Eryri for you?

  • Climbers who can hold power on the fifth climb, not just the first. This course rewards repeatability far more than one big effort.
  • Riders who pace to their own threshold. On a climb-dense day, matching the wheel in front early is what wrecks the back half.
  • Confident descenders. Welsh mountain descents are technical and often wet, so real time is won and lost pointing downhill.
  • Anyone who picks their route honestly. Three distances from 43 to 120 miles let you choose a day that fits your fitness, not just the hero option.

Training plan for Etape Eryri

A training plan for Etape Eryri isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.

01 · Race demands
What Eryri throws at you
  • Relentless climb density: no true flat, you're climbing or descending the whole day
  • Short, steep Welsh bergs hitting 15 to 20 percent that demand low gearing
  • The signature Pen-y-Pass drag, 5 to 6km climbing to Snowdonia's highest paved pass
  • Cold, wind-exposed summits and greasy technical descents, even in June
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Climb repeats: 5 to 6 x 6-10min at 88-100% FTP on real climbs, holding the last one
  • Over-unders on gradient: 3 x 12min alternating 90% and 105% FTP uphill
  • Punchy berg reps: 8-10 x 1-2min at 110-130% FTP on steep ramps
  • A rising long ride toward a 5-6hr, 2,000m-plus climb-dense day for the Mawr
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
  • One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
