Classic ~50km Welsh MTB enduro/marathon at Machynlleth (~2,000m climbing), grinding long fire-road climbs to earn technical natural descents on the Mach 1/2/3 trails. Skill and repeatable climbing decide it, not FTP. Sells out fast. Next date ~2027-05-02 is approximate.
Location
Machynlleth, Dyfi Forest, mid Wales
Not a modern timed-stage enduro. This is enduro in the old sense: one big loop through the Dyfi Forest at Machynlleth, grinding long fire-road climbs to earn the famous natural Mach descents. Early May, mid Wales.
The short distance is a trap. The climbs aren't really what catch people out, it's the descents: rocky, rooty, natural Welsh singletrack that punishes tired arms and rewards nerve.
Skill decides this day, not watts. A rider fit enough to climb but shaky on the tech loses time and takes risks. Fitness gets you up, handling gets you down safe and fast.
Who this suits
- Riders who love raw natural trails over trail-centre flow. This is rough, rocky, rooty ground, not manicured berms.
- Climbers who can go again. The loop stacks several long fire-road climbs, so it rewards riders who pace the first one and keep coming back.
- Confident descenders. Handling swings finish times more than fitness here, so time on technical ground pays off.
- Riders on a capable trail bike. A 120 to 150mm bike with a dropper suits this far better than an XC hardtail.
Training plan
A training plan for Dyfi Enduro isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
A skill day disguised as a fitness day
- Repeated long fire-road grinds: pace the first climb or pay for it on the rest.
- Natural Welsh descents that are rocky, rooty, technical and physical to ride well.
- Two systems fatigue at once: legs on the climbs, arms and grip on the descents.
- The back third is the crash-risk zone, descending on tired arms and fading focus.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Fire-road climbing intervals: 4x8 to 10min on a real climb for repeatable climbing power.
- Natural-trail skills every single week: 60 to 120min on rocky, rooty descents.
- Skills under fatigue: 30 to 45min descending after a 2hr ride, the race-day tired-arm state.
- A long climb-and-descend ride building toward 3.5 to 4hr with 1,500m+ of climbing.
