Cult self-supported overnight mass ride — ~112mi / ~180km flat-to-rolling from London Fields to Dunwich Beach on the Suffolk coast, ridden through the night near the full moon. Not a race, no timing. Pacing, night riding and fuelling, not climbing. Next date ~2027-07-24 approximate.
Location
London Fields (Hackney) → Dunwich Beach, Suffolk
A cult institution of British cycling. \n\nThe route is flat. That is the point. There are no cols and no walls, so the challenge is not gradient or power. \n\nThere is no start gun, no chip timing and no ranking.
You roll out from the pubs at dusk and reach the coast at dawn. It is a completion and an experience, not a competition.
Who this suits
- Riders drawn to the experience over the result. There is no clock, so the reward is the night itself, not a finishing time.
- Steady aerobic riders who can sit at an easy, conversational pace for hours. Durability in the saddle beats power-to-weight here.
- Self-sufficient types. It is self-supported by tradition, so you carry your own lights, food and navigation and sort your own way home.
- Anyone comfortable, or willing to get comfortable, riding in the dark. The cold, sleepy hours are the real test, not the terrain.
Training plan
A training plan for Dunwich Dynamo isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the night throws at you
- Eight to twelve hours in the saddle at an easy pace, so aerobic durability and contact-point comfort decide your night
- Riding unlit lanes in the dark, where good lights and full-night battery matter more than fitness
- A cold, sleepy low around 2 to 4am when rural Suffolk can drop into single digits even in July
- Fuelling yourself for the long haul, self-supported, with no guaranteed food stops on route
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- A progressive long ride building from 2 up to 6hr+ of easy Z2 on flat, rolling terrain
- A fuelling-rehearsal ride of 5 to 6hr holding 40 to 70g of carbs an hour on your exact race food
- Dark rides of 2 to 3hr after nightfall on the actual lights you will use, to build night confidence
- A full dress rehearsal in the exact kit and lights, proving warmth and battery before the night that counts
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
- One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
