The Challenge Rides of Newcastle's Cyclone Festival — four routes from ~34mi to ~102mi (~2,000m) into Northumberland National Park and the Cheviot fringes. Rolling endurance, not a climbing test. Next date ~2027-07-04 approximate.
Location
Newcastle Falcons, Kingston Park, Newcastle upon Tyne
Four routes from one start line, 34 to 102 miles out of Newcastle. Pick the distance that fits your legs, from a rolling afternoon to a full endurance day into the wilds of Northumberland.
The long route runs north and west through quiet river valleys and exposed moorland into Northumberland National Park, brushing the Cheviot fringes. No Alpine col, just distance and a string of lumpy, wind-swept climbs.
It's a completion event, not a race against a hard cutoff, so it's a realistic first big sportive. But the Ryals wait near the finish: three short steep ramps that bite after 90 miles on tired legs.
Who this suits
- Riders who want to pick their own distance. Four routes mean you commit to what you can actually train for, not one fixed heroic number.
- Steady endurance riders. The day is won on aerobic durability over a long, lumpy course, not on a single big climb.
- Anyone happy in the wind. The open moors are exposed, so it rewards riders who hold a calm, even effort into a headwind.
- Riders stepping up to their first century. With no hard cutoff and feed stations en route, a big day feels achievable rather than intimidating.
Training plan
A training plan for Cyclone Challenge isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
A long, exposed, lumpy day
- Cumulative distance up to 102 miles, not one big climb, so aerobic durability is the whole game
- Exposed moorland and upland edges where wind can turn a mild day into a grind
- Repeated short, steep climbs like Winters Gibbet that chip away over the miles
- The Ryals: three sharp ramps near the finish that hurt after 90 miles on tired legs
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Progressive long rides, building from 3hr toward 5.5hr to match your chosen route
- Late-ride climb repeats, 6 to 10 by 2 to 4min hard on a steep hill in the last hour, to mirror the Ryals
- Back-to-back weekends, Sat 3.5hr plus Sun 2.5hr, to learn to ride on tired legs
- Sweet spot and punchy over-unders to lift the pace you can hold all day
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
- Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
- Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
- One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
