42.195km exceptionally flat, fast circular road marathon through the Danish capital, past Amalienborg Palace, the Little Mermaid and the Nyhavn canals. ~40m elevation, a prime PB and Boston-qualifier course. 09:30 start, ~6hr cutoff, cool May temps. Sustainability-pioneer event.
Location
Copenhagen, Denmark
About 40m of climbing across the whole 42.195km. Copenhagen is roughly as flat as a marathon gets, one of Europe's fastest, a genuine PB and Boston-qualifier course.
A circular loop on closed city roads past Amalienborg Palace, the Little Mermaid and the Nyhavn canals. No hills, no undulations, nothing hidden in the profile.
Cool early-May air and a 09:30 start make the conditions near-ideal. The only thing between you and a fast time is your own pacing and fuelling, plus the wall at 30km.
Who this suits
- PB chasers. A flat, fast profile in cool May air is one of the best chances in Europe to run a personal best or a Boston qualifier.
- Disciplined pacers. The course never changes, so it rewards runners who hold back early and run an even or slightly negative split.
- First-timers who've done the miles. A friendly, flat course and a generous six-hour cutoff make a first marathon realistic, not intimidating.
- Runners who've drilled their fuelling. On a course this even, the race is decided by absorbing carbs for three-plus hours, not by the terrain.

01 · Race demands
What Copenhagen throws at you
- 42.195km with barely 40m of climbing: a pure test of even pacing, not terrain
- The flat, fast start tempts a hot opening, then the wall bites at 30 to 35km
- Fuelling under load: 60 to 90g of carbs an hour for three-plus hours
- Cool 8 to 14C conditions, but breezy, exposed stretches where drafting pays
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- The marathon-pace long run: 28 to 35km with 15 to 20km at goal pace, fuelled exactly as on race day
- Long tempo: 40 to 60 minutes continuous at marathon pace, controlled, never hard
- Threshold intervals: 3 to 4 by 3km with short recoveries to sharpen the engine
- Negative-split long runs plus a midweek 14 to 18km medium-long to bank volume
