24hr MTB — solo / pairs
A 24-hour mountain bike race pitched deliberately into the worst weather window of the year. 10am Saturday to 10am Sunday, looping the red-graded 7stanes trails at Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders.
Each lap climbs around 350m over rock steps, bridge crossings, boardwalks and berms. Fast technical descents like Into The Valley and Twist n Shout reward riders who keep their nerve when tired.
This is a brutal race, and honestly so. Most of it is ridden in the dark, cold and likely wet, on technical trail. A strong solo rider stacks well over 7,000m of climbing before the dawn push to the finish.
The race
A lapped course at the Rock UK adventure park near Newcastleton, all red-graded: roughly sixty percent tight singletrack, forty percent long fireroad drags. You repeat it solo, in a pair, or in a quad team for the full day.
Who this suits
- Riders who get stronger as conditions get worse. The race is scheduled for the foulest weather on purpose, so cold, wet and dark reward grit over fair-weather form.
- Confident technical riders. The singletrack throws rock steps, bridges and boardwalks at you in the dark, so handling under fatigue matters as much as fitness.
- Solo diesels who ration effort. The climbing stacks up relentlessly over a full day and night, punishing anyone who starts too hard.
- Anyone who prefers a small, gritty race. Roughly 60 to 100 riders, campsite-based and friendly, not a big commercial start line.
Training plan
A training plan for The Chiller 24 isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the Chiller throws at you
- Most of the twenty-four hours ridden in the dark, on narrow technical singletrack.
- Cold, wet, exposed conditions at 300m in the Scottish Borders.
- Rock steps, bridges and boardwalks that stay demanding when you are shattered.
- Climbing that repeats every lap with no real flat to recover on.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Tired skills rides: two to three hours steady, then straight onto technical trail with your concentration already low.
- Weekly night rides progressing onto red-graded singletrack in the dark over four to six weeks.
- Hill repeats on rough terrain, four to eight efforts of five to ten minutes, plus fireroad sweet-spot blocks.
- A day-into-night race simulation of six to ten hours, backed by back-to-back long weekend rides for durability.
