5-day MTB stage race across South Africa's Klein Karoo semi-desert and Outeniqua mountains (~500km, approximate). Heat, sand and remote exposure; ridden solo or in pairs. Date and figures approximate until the organiser confirms.
Location
Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa
Billed as the race less travelled. Five days of mountain biking across South Africa's Klein Karoo, a semi-desert of open plains ringed by the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains.
The route strings fast Karoo jeep track and sandy river crossings between long, sustained mountain passes. Ridden solo, or classically as a matched pair.
This is the quiet one. A smaller, more remote field than the big Cape stage races, where the heat and the open distance, not the crowd, decide your week.

Who this suits
- Riders who back it up day after day. This rewards durability over one big number: the strength to ride four to five hours, then do it all again tomorrow.
- Pairs after a shared adventure. The classic way to ride it is as a matched two, sharing pacing and legally towing each other on the passes.
- Anyone willing to prepare for heat. The Klein Karoo is hot and exposed, so it suits riders who put in the acclimatisation rather than winging it.
- Those drawn to the remote. A smaller, quieter field far from the big-race crowds, where the landscape does the talking.
Training plan
A training plan for Momentum Cape Pioneer Trek isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
Five hot days in the Karoo
- Heat and exposure: Karoo days routinely hit 25 to 35C with almost no shade, so dehydration is a real DNF driver.
- Back-to-back fatigue: five stages mean single-day fitness quietly collapses by stage four.
- Sand and corrugations: dry riverbeds and rough jeep track sap momentum and punish concentration.
- Long mountain passes: sustained climbs of 30 to 60 minutes on the crux mountain stages.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Weekend doubles: four to five hours Saturday, then three to four hours on tired legs Sunday.
- A three to four day back-to-back MTB block to rehearse the race's day-on-day load.
- Big climbing days of 1,500 to 2,000m off-road, plus sand and loose-gravel practice.
- Heat work: overdressed rides and post-ride sauna sessions so you arrive acclimatised.
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
- Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
