Brecon Beast

109km (and 71km) Welsh mountain MTB marathon over Brecon Beacons moorland and rocky byways, with big climbing — a cult charity event. Next date ~2027-09-12 is approximate; confirm the event is running.

Date
12 Sept 2027
Location
Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), Wales
Category
MTB marathon
Difficulty
Tough

No queen climb to pace for. The Brecon Beast is death by a thousand ascents, a relentless stack of Welsh mountain climbs over open moorland and rocky byways in the Bannau Brycheiniog.

Byways, bridleways and open mountainside, including sections across private land rideable only on event day. A cult September charity event, run in the heart of Wales' biggest hills.

The cutoff is generous, so the clock isn't the enemy. The weather is. Open, shelterless tops can turn cold, wet and wind-blown, survival-grade at their worst.

Who this suits

Is Brecon Beast for you?

  • Diesel climbers who ration the effort. The Beast stacks ascent after ascent with no decisive climb, so it rewards a repeatable grind over anyone who attacks the first hill.
  • Off-road riders comfortable in bad weather. Shelterless moorland can turn cold and wind-blown, which suits riders who have trained in the wet, not around it.
  • Self-sufficient mountain riders. Feed stations are sparse and the terrain remote, so it favours anyone happy carrying kit, fixing a flat and fuelling themselves for hours.
  • Riders after a real mountain day, not a bike park. Rocky byways and access-only land reward durability and handling over raw speed.
Training plan

Training plan for Brecon Beast

A training plan for Brecon Beast isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.

01 · Race demands
A stack of mountain climbs
  • Relentless climbing with no single decisive ascent, held repeatable across 6 to 10 hours
  • The hardest climbing waiting on tired legs in the final third
  • Exposed, shelterless moorland where wind, rain and low cloud bite hardest
  • Rocky byways and boggy tracks that punish thin tyres and reward handling
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Sustained Climb Intervals: 3x15min at 85 to 90% FTP on a climb, ridden fresh then tired
  • A Peak Mountain Ride building to 5 to 6hr with 2,000m+ of climbing, your best single predictor
  • Back-to-back weekends, a long Saturday then a climbing Sunday, to ride on cumulative fatigue
  • Fuelling rehearsal at 60 to 90g of carbs an hour, practised on the climbs where eating feels worst
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
  • Adapts every week as Beina learns how you respond
  • Syncs your sessions straight to Garmin and Wahoo
  • One clear next session, never a wall of spreadsheet
