Basajaun

~870km self-supported gravel bikepacking ultra through the green Basque mountains and Pyrenees foothills, ~15,000m+ of steep relentless climbing. ~2027 date and figures are approximate.

Date
26 Jul 2027
Location
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain (mountain gravel)
Category
Bikepacking race — solo
Difficulty
Savage

Around 16,000m of steep climbing packed into 870km of Basque gravel. The vertical, not the distance, defines this one. Self-supported and self-navigated, out of Vitoria-Gasteiz into the green mountains.

The line strings together forest and farm tracks, punchy climbs and steep loaded descents through lush valleys and the Pyrenees foothills. No markings, no feed stations, just a GPX file and the woods.

It is relentless rather than technical. The climbing is never long and never over, hill after hill on tired legs across several nights of real darkness. A savage, honest test of who can keep climbing.

Who this suits

Is Basajaun for you?

  • Strong steep climbers who can repeat an effort. This is won on the twentieth punchy gravel climb of day four, not on raw top-end power.
  • Self-sufficient riders happy alone. No support crew and no markings, so remote villages and Spanish siesta hours mean you plan your own resupply.
  • Anyone who has bivvied and ridden real darkness. Several genuine nights on gravel reward riders at home with proper lights and a sleep plan.
  • Riders who like it green and wet. The Basque Country is lush because it rains, so damp forests and slippery steep descents come with the ground.
