The original marathon, run on the road it is named after. Point to point from the town of Marathon to Athens, finishing on the track inside the marble Panathenaic Stadium, one of the most storied finishes in the sport.

It is iconic, and it is honest. One long climb from 10km to 31km, roughly 21km of sustained ascent straight through the middle of the race, defines the whole day.

This is not a PB course. Run the flat opening easy, climb by effort, and the marble stadium is your reward. Race it like a flat marathon and you will be walking by 30km.

Who this suits

Is Athens Marathon "The Authentic" for you?

  • Runners chasing a bucket-list finish, not a fast time. The historic route and the marble stadium are the prize here, not the clock.
  • Patient pacers. The 21km climb rewards runners who start the flat opening conservatively and hold effort steady instead of banking time early.
  • Strong climbers on foot. Anyone who trains hills and can keep running uphill for kilometres has a real edge through the middle third.
  • Runners with durable quads. The descent into Athens hits legs already emptied by the climb, so downhill-trained legs finish running rather than walking.

Training plan for Athens Marathon "The Authentic"

A training plan for Athens Marathon "The Authentic" isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.

01 · Race demands
What Athens throws at you
  • A 21km sustained climb from 10km to 31km, straight through the middle where a marathon already hurts.
  • A deceptively easy flat opening 10km that tempts you to bank time you will pay back on the climb.
  • A descent from 31km to 40km that punishes quads already emptied by the ascent.
  • Greek autumn warmth and real sun exposure on the open climb, typically 12 to 18C at the start.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
  • Sustained-climb long runs of 28 to 35km with 15 to 20km at goal effort, fuelled exactly as on race day.
  • Uphill threshold efforts, 4 to 6 by 4 to 6 minutes of sustained climbing, to build the strength to run the ascent rather than trudge it.
  • Downhill durability sessions on long controlled descents to toughen the quads for the 31 to 40km finish.
  • A dress rehearsal of 28 to 30km on a climb-then-descend route at race effort, with your exact race-day nutrition, kit and shoes.
03 · Shaped around you
Not a generic schedule
  • Built from your current fitness and the time you actually have
