The UK's biggest MTB event — a modern timed-stage enduro with 7 timed technical descent stages linked by untimed liaison climbs across a ~45km Yorkshire Dales loop. Sells out in minutes. Next date approximate (late July, confirm on ardrock.co.uk).
Location
Reeth, Swaledale, North Yorkshire
Your whole result is the time you spend pointing downhill. Seven timed technical descent stages, linked by untimed liaison climbs, across a ~45km loop out of Reeth in the Yorkshire Dales.
Only about 15 to 30 minutes of the day is actually raced. The rest is liaison: long moorland and fire-road climbs you ride at your own pace to reach the next stage start.
Steep rocky chutes, fast loose gullies, natural Dales terrain. Flat power means nothing here. It's decided by how fast and clean you descend, and whether you can still do it on stage seven.
Who this suits
- Confident technical descenders who read rough natural ground at speed. The whole result lives on the descents, not the climbs.
- Riders with all-day endurance who can still nail stage 7. Repeating a near-max descent seven times on tired arms is the real test.
- Anyone comfortable on a capable enduro bike (150-170mm) on steep rocky chutes, not just bermed trail-centre flow.
- Riders who want the UK's biggest MTB weekend. Reeth turns into a festival and it sells out in minutes.
Training plan
A training plan for Ard Rock Enduro isn't a generic base build. Beina reads the event's exact demands, looks at your specific profile and the time you actually have, and maps a highly adapted plan to the start line.
01 · Race demands
What the day throws at you
- Seven timed descent stages on steep rocky chutes and fast loose gullies, with the whole result decided in 15 to 30 total minutes of racing.
- A long day out, 5 to 9 hours, linking stages by untimed liaison climbs across exposed moorland.
- Repeatability: descending stage 7 as fast and clean as stage 1, on tired arms and blown hands.
- Natural Dales terrain, not trail-centre flow. Grip, line choice and brake control on high-consequence ground.
02 · Key sessions
What your weeks look like
- Repeated-descent sessions: 5 to 8 near-max descents with liaison-pace climbs between, modelling the 7-stage repeatability.
- Weekly steep natural-trail skills on rocky chutes and gullies: grip, line choice, brake control at speed.
- Skills under fatigue: 30 to 45 minutes of steep descending after a 3-hour liaison ride, for tired-arm late stages.
- Long liaison rides building toward 5 to 6 hours, plus upper-body and core strength for grip durability.
