Short one this month, because June was really one job: the rename, and getting everybody safely moved onto it.
Pufferized started as a coach for one race. A daft, brilliant, freezing race in a forest in the Highlands in January, and an app built because I wanted to survive it. It worked. Riders showed up better prepared, and the whole thing grew from there almost entirely on the back of what that community asked for.
The Strathpuffer will always be the coach's favourite event, and Puffer is still where every good idea in here came from.
But the app quietly stopped being about one race a while ago. There are now hundreds of events in the system: marathons, gran fondos, gravel, MTB, ultras on road and trail, across 31 countries. People are training for all of them, and asking a runner in Chamonix or a gran fondo rider in Italy to sign into something called Pufferized never quite landed.
So the name had to grow up with the app.
Say hello to Beina
Beina /ˈbeɪnə/, Icelandic and Old Norse: to set in motion, to direct. From bein, the legs that carry you.
That's the whole idea. Point yourself at something, and get moving towards it. Same coach, same obsessive attention to your training, new name that fits everything it now covers.
There's a facelift along with it: new logo, new colours, a slightly more grown-up look.
Your account came with you
The rest of the month was the unglamorous half, and honestly the bigger half. A new name means a new home for absolutely everything: new domain, new app, new email, all the plumbing underneath it, rebuilt and re-pointed.
The part I cared most about was that none of that should cost you anything. So most of June went into building a proper migration path, so your account walked across intact rather than you starting again from scratch.
Sign up on Beina with the same email address you used on Pufferized and it recognises you, then brings everything with you:
- Active and archived training plans
- Full training and activity history
- Every coach conversation
- Race history and results
- Your journal entries
The one thing you had to do yourself was reconnect Strava and Garmin, because those permissions are tied to the old app and can't be handed over. Silver lining: Wahoo was waiting on the other side, so a good few of you picked up a new integration on the way through.
I moved people over in small batches through the month rather than flipping a switch, checking each group landed properly before inviting the next. Slower, but nothing got lost.
Where that leaves us
Most of you are now happily settled in the land of Beina, and it went far more smoothly than I'd braced for. It's all been covered in the emails, so you shouldn't need to do a thing, but if you've got a question or something looks off in your account, just reach out and I'll sort it: hello@beina.ai.
Next month Beina goes properly public. That one's a bigger update.
